Short History
Native American tribes lived along the waterways of the Illinois area for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans.
The French colonized the region now known as Illinois in the 1600s; it was ceded to Britain in 1763, in 1783 the US acquired the land. Illinois entered the Union on 3rd December 1818 as the 21st state.
