Strategic Focus for Friday

WELCOME THE KING OF GLORY INTO THE UNITED STATES

The G20 Summit in Argentina – Day 1

President and Mrs.Trump departing for the G20 Summit in Argentina on Thursday! God is with them!

“When a man’s ways please the Lord,

He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.”

Proverbs 16:7

We are praying for President Trump as he attends the G20 Summit in Argentina today and tomorrow,

with his beloved Melania at his side. While dealing with both personal and national issues at home, he now steps onto the world stage, to cope with the numerous crises in the global arena!

The G20 is an international forum for key world government leaders and central bank governors, made up of 19 countries and the European Union (EU): Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States.

For those who wonder exactly how it works, here is a quick overview of the G20.

  • The presidency of the G20, and its hosting responsibilities, rotates between the 19 member countries. Host countries may invite guests, so this year’s host country, Argentina, invited Chile and the Netherlands to attend. Spain is a permanent invited guest, and countries with key regional groups are also invited; this year, Rwanda, Singapore and Senegal will attend, joined by Jamaica representing the Caribbean Community.
  • The G20 agenda includes over 50 meetings of ministers, foreign ministry emissaries (known as sherpas), central bank governors and world leaders, and is divided into two tracks:
    • The Finance track focuses on financial and economic issues (monetary, fiscal and exchange rate policies, infrastructure investment, financial regulation, financial inclusion and international taxation).
    • The Sherpa track focuses on broader issues (political engagement, anti-corruption, development, trade, energy and climate change, gender equality, among others).
  • The annual agenda culminates at the Leaders’ Summit, attended by heads of State or Government. At the summit, they issue a joint declaration based on the policy recommendations prepared at the G20 meetings held throughout the year.

~~~~~
Even before the summit of the world’s largest economies got started today, high drama escalated between some nations attending the gathering. Many fear the G20 is at risk of falling into disarray by being overshadowed by “items not on agenda”: ie. Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the “Brexit” issues, the presence of the Saudi crown prince…not to mention the United States – China trade war.
  • President Trump had planned on eight world leader meetings at the G20, but canceled a sit-down meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, following a briefing with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. He cited the seizure of Ukrainian ships and the capture of 24 crew members by Russia in the Kerch Strait in the Sea of Azov, (the Black Sea) over a territorial dispute on Sunday. Since the ships and sailors have not been returned to Ukraine by Russia, he felt it best to cancel his meeting with President Vladimir Putin and that he looked forward to the situation being resolved!
    • Let us pray: that President Trump will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin to Russia’s clash with Ukraine and try to resolve the issue. There is a long history of territorial expansionism with Russia that has to be frankly addressed.
  • Prior to departing for BA, the President said that he thought that the Brexit deal was good for the EU and may make trade between Washington and London more difficult. British Prime Minister Theresa May’s office disputed that, saying it would allow Britain to sign trade deals with countries throughout the world. With some economies already seeing a slow-down, and the potential of a “no-deal Brexit”, there could be further “dents” in confidence for the global economy.
    • Let us pray: that the relationship and proposed trade agreements between the US and Great Britain will hold up, despite the pressures being put on PM May.
  • Leaders are taking varied approaches in how they deal with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, (MBS), who has been accused of orchestrating the vicious slaughter of reporter Jamal Khashoggi inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul last month. There have been calls for Argentine authorities to arrest the prince to try him for war crimes in Yemen and for the Khashoggi’s killing.
  • Let us pray: that the full truth about the situation will be uncovered, justice done, and that the US will respond appropriately. No “knee-jerk” reactions that precipitate issues with allies! Give the President great wisdom and discernment as he listens and makes his decisions in this!
  • President Trump is scheduled to meet with the Mexican President and Canadian Prime Minister to sign the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), the reworked trade deal with Canada and Mexico, which is replacing NAFTA. Then, the agreement is sent to Congress for approval.
    • There is precedent-setting pro-LGBT language in this version, added by Canada’s Trudeau, which needs to be removed from the USMCA BEFORE the other merits of the agreement are considered.
    • Congress has repeatedly rejected the concept that our Civil Rights law should include “gender identity” and other pro-LGBT protections. We cannot allow Canada’s extreme LGBT agenda to dictate US social policy!
    • Existing provisions within the USMCA would establish special rights for “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” as the supreme law of the land via the Supremacy Clause of the Constitution. Including “sex discrimination” in the USMCA could cause unnecessary confusion in future international treaties as well as domestic laws and policies, in addition to setting a dangerous precedent for courts and future Administrations to build upon.
      Let us pray:
      • that the US will not allow the wording of the agreement to compromise our national values or God’s Word, and that the US will hold the line and not allow Trudeau (an avowed homosexual supporter) to set the terms.
      • Time is of the essence! We stand united in prayer that the President and the members of Congress will oppose any attempts to force the US to adopt a new social policy through this trade agreement!
