Memorial Day

We begin our hour by praising and giving thanks to God!

The key assignment for the 24/7 National Strategic Prayer Call is to intercede hourly 

for the safety and security of our duly elected President, Donald John Trump, 

and to pray for that which pertains to our nation!

We pray for his protection, for our First Lady, Melania, and their marriage

 and for all the members of their family. 

We cover them all with the Blood of Jesus.

We ask that in every situation and decision, President Trump will be led by the Holy Spirit!

 Pray.

We pray for ourselves and our loved ones, and corporately put on the full armor of God!

We lift up the family of our beloved Repeka Nuusa, who stepped into the Lord’s Presence on Tuesday night! 

We continue to pray for healing for Deborah Cole…

that she may be healed totally of cancer that is attacking her!

The Battle for the Survival of the Nation! – Part 21

“I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me

and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” 

Today, on Memorial Day, our people remember and honor those of every generation who gave their all on behalf of our blessed nation! It has been said that those who know their history will fulfill their destiny.  As patriotic Americans who look back on our 244 years of existence, we thank God for His faithfulness to us, from generation to generation, as we pause to go deeper into the significance of this “holiday” / Holy Day. 

On November 19, 1863, after the Union army defeated the Confederacy at the Battle of Gettysburg, President Abraham Lincoln dedicated the Soldiers’ National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Surveying the site where Americans on both sides of the Civil War sacrificed their lives, Abraham Lincoln urged his listeners to resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain – that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom – and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”   Those powerful words are as true today as they were then, so let us agree with them now…for our beloved nation!  Pray.  

Our modern Memorial Day originated with an order issued in 1868 for the annual decoration of war graves, by Major General John A. Logan, commander in chief of the Grand Army of the Republic. 

  • Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of an organization of Union veterans,  the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR),  established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers
  • General Logan declared that Decoration Day should be observed on May 30. It is believed that date was chosen because at that time, there would be flowers in bloom all over the country.

The first large observance was held that year at Arlington National Cemetery, across the Potomac River from Washington, DC. The ceremonies centered around the mourning-draped veranda of the Arlington mansion, once the home of General Robert E. Lee. Various Washington officials, including General and Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant, presided over the ceremonies. After speeches, children from the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Orphan Home and members of the GAR made their way through the cemetery, strewing flowers on both Union and Confederate graves, reciting prayers and singing hymns. Even at its inception, it was a God-honoring observance!  Pray.  

In 1971, Memorial Day was established as a federal holiday by Congress. Regardless of when Decoration Day (or Memorial Day) may have been officially established, debate continues regarding exactly when and where the first observance of this nature was held in the United States. 

  • In May 1966 the city of Waterloo, New York, was designated as the “Birthplace of Memorial Day” via a Congressional resolution and a presidential proclamation commemorating a patriotic observance held in that town one hundred years earlier: The story of Memorial Day begins in the summer of 1865, when a local druggist, Henry C. Welles, mentioned to some of his friends at a social gathering that while praising the living veterans of the Civil War, that it would be well to remember the patriotic dead by placing flowers on their graves. 
  • The following spring, he shared his idea with General John B. Murray. Murray was an intensely patriotic civil war hero, who supported the idea wholeheartedly and marshaled veterans’ support. Plans were developed for a more complete celebration by a local citizens’ committee headed by Welles and Murray.
  • On May 5, 1866, the Village was decorated with flags at half-mast, draped with evergreens and mourning black. Veterans, civic societies and residents, led by General Murray, marched to the strains of martial music to the three village cemeteries. Ceremonies were held and soldiers’ graves decorated.
  • One year later, on May 5, 1867, the ceremonies were repeated, and in 1868, Waterloo joined with other communities in holding their observance on May 30th, in accordance with General Logan’s orders. It has been held annually ever since. Pray. 

Waterloo held the first formal, village-wide, annual observance of a day dedicated to honoring the war dead. 

  • On March 7, 1966, the State of New York recognized Waterloo by a proclamation signed by Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller. 
  • This was followed by recognition from Congress of the United States when the House of Representatives and the Senate unanimously passed House Concurrent Resolution 587 on May 17th and May 19th, 1966 respectively, which reads in part: “Resolved that the Congress of the United States, in recognition of the patriotic tradition set in motion one hundred years ago in the Village of Waterloo, NY, does hereby officially recognize Waterloo, New York as the birthplace of Memorial Day …”

We pray:

  • We will know, honor and teach our history to our children, so that whatever comes against this God-birthed nation will be defeated and vanquished by the generations that follow us, as He leads them on (KADIMA!)  to VICTORY… for the King and His Kingdom! Pray.

Arlington National Cemetery is a perpetual remembrance of WHY WE ARE STILL FREE!!! Row upon row of white headstones, marked with Christian crosses and the Jewish Star of David, symbolize the values for which these many lives were sacrificed! 

The picture below is one the military has not allowed to be shown…until now. This is a “behind the scenes” look from Dover Air Force Base, where the bodies of fallen American soldiers are prepared for burial. That includes being properly dressed, all the way down to the smallest detail. Staff Sgt. Miguel Deynes is making sure the uniform is just right for an army pilot recently killed in Afghanistan.

When a member of the military makes the ultimate sacrifice, the reverence and respect with which their bodies are handled are exceptional!

  • Their body is flown back to the US on a cargo jet…with a military escort.
  • A team of service members wearing white gloves carries the coffins, covered with flags, to a white van that takes them to the Armed Forces Medical Examiner.
  • The remains are washed, the hands and nails are scrubbed clean, and the hair is shampooed. If necessary bones are wired together and damaged tissue is reconstructed with flesh-toned wax. 
  • Sometimes photos will be used, at other times, the team just uses intuition to recreate wrinkles in the faces and lines around the mouth or at the corners of the eyes. 
  • Above all, the body must look “normal”… like someone who is sleeping. 
  • Once the body is ready, then the uniform is prepared. Medals are put in the proper order on the ribbon rack above the jacket’s breast pocket. 

Pray. 

During the height of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, 10 to 20 bodies were arriving every day, and the embalming team often worked all night to get the bodies home on time. That can take an emotional toll. It is heartbreaking to see how young the fallen soldiers are, and how many leave behind small children.  Sgt. Deynes says they are advised not to do research into the backgrounds of the soldiers, for  “If I knew the story of every individual who went through here, I would probably be in a padded cell.”  Pray.

Although the dress uniform being prepared in this particular case above will be for a closed casket funeral, even so, it will be perfectly tailored, starched and pressed. Everything will be checked down to the last detail. Sgt. Deynes says, “They’re (the family) not going to see it. I do it for myself. It’s more than an honor… it’s a blessing to dress that soldier for the last time.”

We pray:

  • That the families of the fallen will find consolation as they see how reverently their loved ones are cared for by this dedicated team, and be comforted! Pray. 
  • That the same honor and dignity given our fallen heroes will be extended to our living veterans, many of whom suffered the loss of limbs and diminished mental capacity due to PTS (post-traumatic stress) after returning from the front!  Pray. 

“Courage is not the absence of fear. It is the will to face it.”

These pictures are what Memorial Day is all about. It’s not about barbeques or trips to the beach, but a time to remember and honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice with their lives, serving and fighting for our great country.  The 24/7 family salutes  ALL the men and women who paid the ultimate price with their lives for our freedom!

  • That we  “who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercywill fulfill our DIVINE ASSIGNMENT…and complete the mission and ministry God has called us to in the end times! Pray.
  • That President Trump will continue to communicate with the people of the nation, encouraging us all that, despite “this momentary slight affliction”…we still have God’s promised “future full of hope.Pray.
  • That we will soon have a response to our letter and that President Trump will set an “appointed place” and an “appointed time” for our meeting with him! Pray.
