Strategic Focus for Monday

WELCOME THE KING OF GLORY INTO THE UNITED STATES

Lest We Forget! Memorial Day 2019

Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.”

John 15:13

There is no higher expression of love then to be willing to give up your very life for your family and friends… and to leave your homeland and go into battle in places around the world to defend freedom, all the while knowing that death could be imminent! Today, Memorial Day 2019, we as a nation express our gratitude to God for those many brave American heroes who, from generation to generation have paid the ultimate sacrifice, and extend to them the honor that is due!

As we celebrate, we also have the responsibility to teach our children about Memorial Day, so they know that it is not just a day off of school, time for a family picnic or bar-b-que, or the beginning of summer. It is critical for us to know our American history, to acknowledge our spiritual foundations and rightly understand our Godly “inheritance”…and to pass that on to them! Sharing a love of our history is a critical step…and if we fail to teach these things to the generations that follow us, they will miss out on vital parts of their inheritance!

Memorial Day, honoring all those military veterans who sacrificed their lives for this nation, is one of our “national days of remembrance” – a patriotic holiday! The others are:

  • the Fourth of July (Independence Day) when our nation celebrates its birth,
  • Veterans Day, November 11th which recognizes all who have served in our military in the past
  • Armed Forces Day, the 3rd Saturday of May each year, on which we honor those currently serving.

For Christians, Memorial Day is in line with Biblical teachings of making the ultimate sacrifice for others as this is the basis of Christian theology, expressed in our verse for today, John 15:13 Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.

Memorial Day began as a commemoration of those who died in the Civil War…the war between the North and the South. It was first called Decoration Day, a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the dead with flowers. The military adopted proper observances and after World War I, the day was expanded to honor those who died in all American wars. In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday to be celebrated on the last Monday in May. Each year, as this last Monday of May comes around, we share this story with those who come after us, “lest they forget” the history of this great nation that we hold dear…the good and the bad… the joyous and the sorrowful. We must teach our children why we memorialize this day, why it is sacred to us…and pause with them to thank God for all those who have given their lives in its service. This is our duty as citizens…and as parents!

We pray:

  • In gratitude for those who fought so that others could go on living and enjoying freedom. These countless, self sacrificing heroes, gave their very lives, esteeming the hopes and dreams of others above their own. Those who were His are now home, and united with God for all eternity!

President Donald Trump understands honoring of our military and our fallen heroes full well. Since they were going to be in Japan today, he and our First Lady made an early Memorial Day visit to Arlington National Cemetery, to pay their respects to those who died in service to our nation!. There, they participated with members of the 3rd US Infantry Regiment (the “Old Guard”) in a decades-old tradition known as “flags in”, placing American flags at service members’ headstones, to honor and remember those who gave their lives for us! Before he departed for Japan, he released his Presidential proclamation for today! Let’s read it and pray!

Proclamation on Prayer for Peace, Memorial Day, 2019

Issued on: May 24, 2019

Whether on the battlefields of Bunker Hill, on the beaches of Normandy, in the jungles of Vietnam, or in the mountains and deserts of the Middle East, brave Americans of every generation have given their last full measure of devotion in defense of our country, our liberty, and our founding ideals. On Memorial Day, we humbly honor these incredible patriots and firmly renew our abiding commitment to uphold the principles for which they laid down their lives.

As a free people, we have a sacred duty to remember the courageous warriors who have made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure that our great country would endure. It is our responsibility to strive to ensure that their noble acts of dedication to our country and the cause of freedom were not in vain and to comfort the families they have left behind, who bear the heartbreak of their loss. We must ensure that the light of our Republic, and all for which these most honorable Americans willingly died, continues to shine forth brightly into the world. As President Lincoln said in 1863 during the dedication of the Gettysburg National Military Cemetery: “It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced.”

As we approach the 75th anniversary of D-Day, we proudly commemorate those heroic and honorable patriots who gave their all for the cause of freedom during some of history’s darkest hours. Thousands of selfless members of our Armed Forces perished on the beaches of Normandy. They bravely gave their lives to pave the way for the Allied liberation of Europe and ultimately victory over the forces of evil. Their historic sacrifices and achievements secured the future of humanity and proved America’s strength in defending freedom and defeating the enemies of civilization.

Those who rest in the hallowed grounds of our country’s national cemeteries laid their lives upon the altar of freedom. Today, as we unite in eternal gratitude for the sacrifices of these extraordinary Americans, let us also offer a prayer for lasting peace. Let us renew our steadfast resolve to work toward a peaceful future, in which the horrors of war are a distant memory and our families, our communities, and our Nation need no longer confront the sorrow and pain of losing our beloved sons and daughters.

In honor and recognition of all of our fallen heroes, the Congress, by a joint resolution approved May 11, 1950, as amended (36 U.S.C. 116), has requested the President issue a proclamation calling on the people of the United States to observe each Memorial Day as a day of prayer for permanent peace and designating a period on that day when the people of the United States might unite in prayer. The Congress, by Public Law 106-579, has also designated 3:00 p.m. local time on that day as a time for all Americans to observe, in their own way, the National Moment of Remembrance.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim Memorial Day, May 27, 2019, as a day of prayer for permanent peace, and I designate the hour beginning in each locality at 11:00 a.m. of that day as a time when people might unite in prayer.

I further ask all Americans to observe the National Moment of Remembrance beginning at 3:00 p.m. local time on Memorial Day. I also request the Governors of the United States and its Territories, and the appropriate officials of all units of government, to direct the flag be flown at half-staff until noon on this Memorial Day on all buildings, grounds, and naval vessels throughout the United States and in all areas under its jurisdiction and control. I also request the people of the United States to display the flag at half-staff from their homes for the customary forenoon period.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-fourth day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand nineteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-third.

DONALD J. TRUMP

We pray:

  • In gratitude for a President who truly loves this country and is giving his life for it daily! Bless him, Lord!
  • For the many who have joined the various branches of our military service to demonstrate love through their vigilance and self sacrifice. We are grateful for their service and with our President, we salute these great heroes.

Today, as we pause to remember the sacrifices our military has made for our country, we reaffirm their service. They were willing to commit to a cause, enlist and fight… without being able to foresee how it would come out. There are historical monuments, statues and tattered flags all across our nation…memorials to their sacrifices! George S. Patton, WWII US Army General, said:

“It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived.”

We agree, and year after year, with public honor, procession, commemorative flags and marches, we thank God and honor those who fought and died…the best of their generations. Like the veterans we honor this day, we are both heirs to and guardians of the blessings of liberty. We are a nation that is strong yet we are humbled, as we remember that the wealth of this nation’s heritage, the strength of its ideals, and the extent of its freedom came at a tremendous price.

We pray:

  • Lord, thank You for the millions of Americans who have served the cause of freedom and died in its name. They sacrificed their futures, hopes, and dreams for the opportunities we now pursue.
  • We honor those fallen heroes who fought for liberty and in defiance of tyranny in numerous places around the world and dedicated their lives to the defense of freedom. Lord, help us to stand with humility as we memorialize them today. Make us worthy of their sacrifices and help each of us to fulfill our own duty to our nation!
  • We pray for those currently serving our nation in the Navy, Marines, Seabees, Coast Guard, Army, National Guard, ICE, Border Patrol, state and local Police, Air Force, Civil Air Patrol, and Special Ops.
    • We ask for their physical protection from injury, loss, attack, addictions…for their mental and emotional protection from fear, deception, anger, hatred, PTSD…for their spiritual protection from curses, demonic oppression, occult practices… for their families to remain intact while they are away serving.
  • We pray for Your continued favor on this great nation. Lord, give us Your strength and guidance as we advance the ideals of liberty and justice around the world.

Specific Prayer Topic for Today

Praying for our Supreme Court and the Judicial System

An order issued Friday by US District Judge Haywood Gilliam. Jr. prevents work from beginning on two of the highest-priority, Pentagon-funded wall projects — one spanning 46 miles of New Mexico;s border and another covering 5 miles on the border by Yuma, Arizona. Gilliam, an Obama appointee, was shown to have given a large contribution to the Obamas! President Donald J. Trump wrote Saturday: “Another activist Obama appointed judge has just ruled against us on a section of the Southern Wall that is already under construction. This is a ruling against Border Security and in favor of crime, drugs and human trafficking. We are asking for an expedited appeal!”

We pray:

  • That this case will come before the Supreme Court immediately and that those serving on the bench of our highest court will consider this and the other cases brought before them, rendering rulings that will uphold the very foundations of this nation.
  • May our SCOTUS Justices be mindful of the sacrifices made by the generations of Americans who have come before us, as well as those now serving our country with pure hearts, like our President!
