Strategic Focus for Sunday

WELCOME THE KING OF GLORY INTO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

President Trump in South Korea Following the G20

“Behold, I will do a new thing, now it shall spring forth; shall you not know it?

I will even make a road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.”

Isaiah 43:19

Yesterday, around 3 PM local time in Japan, President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping had the long-anticipated face-to-face meeting at the G20 in Osaka, Japan. It was their first in seven months, and  President Trump said that things “went better than expected,” that the US and China were “back on track” in trade talks and negotiations are continuing. “We’ve had an excellent relationship,” Trump said to Xi before the talks, “but we want to do something that will even it up with respect to trade.”

During their meeting, President Trump got China to come “back to the table” to continue trade talks, by agreeing to a “tariff truce”, foregoing any new tariffs on Chinese imports, although the US has already put tariffs on $250 B in Chinese imports this year and had threatened to tax an additional $300B. In another strategic move to encourage China to become a “good” global trade partner,  the President allowed Huawei, (a Chinese corporation ultimately owned by the Chinese Communist party), to again buy microchips from US companies. The de-escalation pattern is normative for President Trump and Xi, whose agreements often break down over negotiation details, such as the dispute over Huawei Technologies.   President Trump told reporters: “I think we can go on to do something that will be truly monumental and great for both countries.”   President Xi said, “Cooperation and dialogue are better than friction and confrontation.”

We pray:

  • In gratitude for a President who is both wise and discerning, and strong yet flexible in his ability to negotiate with those who may be antagonistic toward us but still want and need to do business with us!
  • Bless him and cause that which he has again opened up in negotiations to flourish and produce good fruit, that will benefit our nation and those we are trading with. Let the results be fair and just for all!

Following the G20 meeting in Japan, President Trump traveled to spend a day and a half in Seoul, South Korea, where he will be meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in.  The President also plans to visit the DMZ – the Demilitarized Zone- (a strip of land that separates North and South Korea) to visit and speak with our military personnel stationed there! Before leaving Japan, he sent out a tweet raising the prospect of a meeting with  Kim Jong Un…offering a “meet and greet” with the North Korean dictator for a handshake at the border.

“After some very important meetings, including my meeting with President Xi of China, I will be leaving Japan for South Korea (with President Moon). While there, if Chairman Kim of North Korea sees this, I would meet him at the Border / DMZ just to shake his hand and say Hello(?)!”

We pray:

  • Lord, we once again apply the BLOOD OF JESUS to our President, and ask that Your angels will be sent to accompany him every step of the way as he travels in foreign lands! Give him wisdom to know what to say and do, and when to refrain. Thank You for protecting him from all harm!
  • Whether they meet or not, we pray that the relationship with NK will improve after this act of goodwill by our President!

There have been no public meetings between Washington and Pyongyang since February. The major issue is North Korea’s nuclear weapons, which threaten the security of the region. Kim views them as a  deterrent to a possible US attack that could eventually lead to the overthrow of his communist dictatorship. Despite the breakdown of the nuclear negotiations, both men have described their personal relationship as “good”. The chances for a resumption of US-North Korea diplomacy have brightened since Trump and Kim recently exchanged personal letters. (President Trump called Kim’s letter “beautiful,” while Kim described the President’s as “excellent.”) The prospect of a cross-border handshake and a potential crossing into North Korea by an American President could kick-start the resumption of formal negotiations…despite the certainty of Democrats accusing the President of “cozying up” to dictators. The President discussed his offer to Kim in casual terms, saying: “All I did is put out a feeler, if you’d like to meet.  If he’s there we’ll see each other for two minutes.”  North Korea responded by calling the offer a “very interesting suggestion.”

North Korea has insisted that it won’t surrender to US-led sanctions and has accused Washington of trying to “bring us to our knees.” Kim has said North Korea will seek a “new way” if the United States persists with sanctions and pressure. Any “progress” toward North Korean denuclearization could help bring peace to a Korean Peninsula, which has “technically” been at war for 69 years. Although the Korean War ended with an armistice in 1953, no peace treaty has ever been signed.

We pray:

  • Lord, You know the hearts of these two men. You know the fears that haunt Kim about losing power and appearing weak, and the desire of our President to prevent nuclear war. Be there with them as they go into any meetings, and let a  lasting peace be wrought so that the region will be secure!
  • Bring our President home safely. May he be rewarded publicly for his private efforts to see the nations working together to benefit the global economy and maintain a lasting peace that benefits all!

Specific Prayer Topic for Today

Praying for our President and his Administration

The Trump Administration has proposed a rule that will help protect vulnerable women and children by allowing federally funded homeless shelters to consider a range of factors including biological sex in deciding whether to provide lodging to people. The rule will become final on July 22, 2019.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) rule would permit shelters that have facilities, like bathrooms and sleeping quarters separated by biological sex, to establish policy that considers “privacy, safety, practical concerns, religious beliefs, any relevant considerations under civil rights and nondiscrimination authorities, the individual’s sex as reflected in official government documents, as well as the gender which a person identifies with” before allowing accommodation or admission to the facility. The rule will also provide flexibility for faith-based shelter providers…as the current rule can discourage them from seeking HUD funding because of their religious beliefs.

Mat Staver of Liberty Counsel said, “I commend the Trump administration for protecting women and children with this new HUD rule. The current rule does not consider the practical concerns of shelter providers who serve vulnerable clients who are seeking refuge from violence and abusive relationships. Women and girls are entitled to privacy and protection from predators who ‘identify as females’ with the intent of committing sexual assault.”

We pray:

  • That the pattern of securing and protecting women and children would continue, and that those who are deceptive and are “predators” would be identified and removed, so they can do no harm!
