Strategic Focus for Wednesday
WELCOME THE KING OF GLORY INTO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
ONE NATION UNDER GOD, INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL!
The Activation of the Spirit of the American Revolution – Part 2
“Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”
2 Corinthians 3:17
Founding Father, Thomas Paine said: “Spiritual freedom is the root of political liberty…as the union between spiritual freedom and political liberty seems nearly inseparable, it is our duty to defend both.” Pray.
On the morning of November 11, 1620, when the Mayflower dropped its anchor off the coast of Cape Cod, the group of English Separatists, later known as the Pilgrims, fell to their knees and blessed God for bringing them safely across the “vast and furious ocean” to a new life in the New World. Before they could begin this new life, however, they had to solve some very practical problems. Their solution was to draft an agreement, later known as the Mayflower Compact, that became a first in consensual government and ensured everyone in the new colony would abide by the same laws.
We pray:
- In gratitude for this crucial document, written and signed by believers in Almighty God, who laid the foundation for our Declaration of Independence and our US Constitution! Pray.
Signing of the Mayflower Compact – November 11, 1620
Normally, the Mayflower’s cargo was wine and dry goods, but on this trip the ship carried 102 passengers: 50 were men, 19 were women and 33 were young adults and children. 41 of them were Protestant religious separatists, from the Church of England, seeking the right to worship as they wished. They called themselves “Saints” and hoped to establish a new church in the New World. (Today, we refer to them as “Pilgrims.”)
Others onboard were common folk that the Pilgrims called “strangers.” In order to increase the voyage’s chance of success, the Pilgrims had recruited ordinary merchants, craftsmen and workers, along with their families and indentured servants to come along with them. These “strangers,” as the Pilgrims called them, had their own reasons for joining the journey, and didn’t share the goal of separating from the Church of England. Pray.
Before leaving England, the Separatists had signed a contract with the Virginia Company to establish a colony near the Hudson River, which at the time was part of Virginia. The Virginia Company was a trading company chartered by King James I with the goal of colonizing parts of the eastern coast of the New World. London stockholders financed the Pilgrims’ voyage with the understanding they’d be repaid in profits from the new settlement.
Since the Mayflower crossed the Atlantic at the height of storm season, the journey was horribly unpleasant, and treacherous storms drove their ship off course, hundreds of miles to the north, causing the settlers to land near Cape Cod, in Massachusetts, which was outside of Virginia’s jurisdiction. Discord began before the colonists even left the ship. The “strangers” argued the Virginia Company contract was void, since the Mayflower had landed outside of Virginia Company territory, and they were no longer bound to the company’s charter. The defiant “strangers” refused to recognize any rules, since there was no official government over them. Pilgrim leader William Bradford later wrote, “several strangers made discontented and mutinous speeches.” Pray.
The Pilgrims knew if something wasn’t done quickly it could be every man, woman and family for themselves! Pilgrim leaders wanted to quell the rebellion before it took hold. After all, establishing a New World colony would be difficult enough without dissent in the ranks. The Pilgrims knew they needed as many productive, law-abiding souls as possible to make the colony successful.
With that in mind, they set out to create a temporary set of laws for ruling themselves. as per majority agreement. Well-educated pastor William Brewster is usually given credit for composing the agreement which would bind them and the “strangers” together, and ensure that everyone in the new colony would abide by the same laws. A document was drafted and signed aboard the ship…and became known as the “Mayflower Compact”.
Pray.

“Mayflower Compact”
In the name of God, Amen.
We, whose names are underwritten, the loyal subjects of our dread sovereign Lord, King James,
by the grace of God, of Great Britain, France, and Ireland King, Defender of the Faith, etc.
Having undertaken, for the glory of God, and advancement of the Christian faith,
and honor of our King and Country, a voyage to plant the first colony in the northern parts of Virginia,
do by these presents solemnly and mutually, in the Presence of God, and one of another,
covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil body politic,
for our better ordering and preservation and furtherance of the ends aforesaid;
and by virtue hereof to enact, constitute, and frame such just and equal laws, ordinances, acts,
constitutions and offices, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and convenient for the general good of the Colony, unto which we promise all due submission and obedience.
In witness whereof we have hereunder subscribed our names at Cape Cod, the eleventh of November,
in the year of the reign of our sovereign lord, King James, of England, France, and Ireland, the eighteenth, and of Scotland the fifty-fourth.
Anno Domini. 1620

The Mayflower Compact created laws for Pilgrims and non-Pilgrims alike. A short document, it established that:
- the colonists would remain loyal subjects to King James, with self-governance
- the colonists would create and enact “laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions and offices…” for the good of the colony, and abide by those laws
- the colonists would create one society and work together to further it
- the colonists would live in accordance with the Christian faith
Pray.
In settling the first colony in the “Northern parts of Virginia,” the Pilgrims and the other Mayflower passengers would “covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil body politic.” As part of this united body, they pledged to make and abide by the same “laws, ordinances, Acts, constitutions, and offices” in order to further “the general good of the Colony: unto which we promise all due submission and obedience.”
- In its form and content, the Mayflower Compact echoed that of earlier covenants that Separatist Christian groups had drawn up when they established their churches in England and Holland, to bind them to each other as well as to God.
- The agreement also drew on the secular tradition of the social contract, the idea of covenants between men themselves, which went back to ancient times.
Pray.
41 of the adult male passengers on the Mayflower signed the agreement, including two of the indentured servants aboard. (One now-famous colonist who signed the Mayflower Compact was Myles Standish, an English military officer hired by the Pilgrims to accompany them to the New World to serve as military leader for the colony. Standish played an important role in enforcing the new laws and protecting colonists against unfriendly Native Americans.) Then, they elected John Carver as the first governor of the new colony, which they called Plymouth Plantation.
Note, that while they intended to form a government for their new colony, the Pilgrims and others aboard the Mayflower were not declaring their independence: the Mayflower Compact began with a clear statement of loyalty to King James of England, along with a commitment to God and to Christianity.
400 years earlier, the Magna Carta had established the idea of “the rule of law”, which had previously meant the king’s law. Now, in the Mayflower Compact, the Pilgrims and strangers were pledging their loyalty to laws they would make themselves. Thus, “Plymouth Colony was the first experiment in consensual government in Western history between individuals with one another, and not with a monarch.” Pray.
The Mayflower Compact was clearly a religious document, in that it held that the people derived their right of self-government from God. But it did not mention a specific church, or method of worship, leaving it open for acceptance by both the Separatist Pilgrims, and the “strangers,” many of whom remained loyal to the Church of England. As the first written constitution in the New World, the Mayflower Compact laid the foundations for two other revolutionary documents: the Declaration of Independence, which stated that governments derive their powers “from the consent of the governed,” and the Constitution. Pray.
It has been argued the Mayflower Compact’s role in cementing the colonists’ dedication to each other and their mission was critical to their endurance that first winter. As the first document to establish self-government in the New World, it remained active until 1691, when Plymouth Colony became part of Massachusetts Bay Colony.
In 1802, speaking at Plymouth, a future President, John Quincy Adams, underscored the lasting importance of the agreement signed aboard the Mayflower more than 180 years earlier, calling it “perhaps the only instance, in human history, of that positive, original social compact, which speculative philosophers have imagined as the only legitimate source of government.” Pray.
The Mayflower Compact was an early, successful attempt at democracy and undoubtedly played a role in future colonists seeking permanent independence from British rule and shaping the nation that eventually became the United States of America. Pray.
We pray:
- That our children will be taught to treasure our true American history, and learn that Godly men and women authored the documents like the Mayflower Compact, the Declaration of Independence and our Constitution! Pray.
- That Americans will wake up and realize, as the Pilgrims did, that we need “productive, law-abiding souls to make this nation successful” once again! Pray.
- That in order to remain free and united, citizens will come to realize that we must be bound to God and living lives that reflect our love for one another! Pray.
- That President Trump will continue to speak out about our true history and soundly reject things such as CRT and the 1619 Project. Pray.
- That he will set an “appointed place” and an “appointed time” for our meeting with him! Pray.
