We begin our hour by praising and giving thanks to God!

“These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God,

and that believing you may have life in His Name.”

John 20:31

We sing: In Christ Alone

In Christ alone. I placed my trust, that I may glory in the power of the cross.

In every victory, let it be said of me, my source of strength. my source of hope…

In Christ alone. I placed my trust, that I may glory in the power of the cross.

In every victory, let it be said of me, my source of strength. my source of hope…

is Christ Alone!

Strategic Focus for Wednesday

WELCOME THE KING OF GLORY INTO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

ONE NATION UNDER GOD, INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL!

The Battle for the Survival of the Nation! – Part 37

The President’s Advisory 1776 Commission Report – Part 16

“Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you

but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.”

 1 Corinthians 1:10

Today, as we review the conclusion to the commentaries in the 1776 Commission Report in Appendix 2, we will see how George Washington considered religion as a communal affair with important social and political dimensions, and also endorsed religious liberty and freedom of conscience and belief. He vigorously defended religious minorities.

This portion of a letter of welcome from members of the first Jewish congregation in Newport, RI, was written to  Washington and read to him on his arrival in the city.

“Deprived as we heretofore have been of the invaluable rights of free Citizens, we now (with a deep sense of gratitude to the Almighty disposer of all events) behold a Government, erected by the Majesty of the People, a Government, which to bigotry gives no sanction, to persecution no assistance, but generously affording to All liberty of conscience, and immunities of Citizenship: deeming every one, of whatever Nation, tongue, or language, equal parts of the great governmental Machine…” Pray.

His response, in which he speaks to this matter directly is part of our focus today.

CONCLUSION

The United States has journeyed far since its founding. While the Founders certainly had disagreements about the nature of religion, they had little doubt that faith was essential to the new experiment in self-government and republican constitutionalism. They knew that citizens who practiced the faith under the protection of religious liberty would support the Constitution that embodies their rights.  Pray.

The shared morality of faithful citizens would sustain a republican culture that would foster stable family relationships and encourage important virtues like fortitude to defend the nation in war, self-restraint over physical appetites or lust for wealth, compassion toward neighbors and strangers in need, self-disciplined labor, intellectual integrity, independence from long-term reliance on private or public benefits, justice in all relationships, prudence in judging the common good, courage to defend their rights and liberties, and finally, piety towards the Creator whose favor determines the well-being of society. Pray.

We have arrived at a point where the most influential part of our nation finds these old faith-based virtues dangerous, useless, or perhaps even laughable. At the same time, many Americans feel that we have veered off the path that has brought so many happiness and success, and fear a growing factionalism cannot be overcome merely by electing a different president or political party. How can America overcome this partisan divide?

The answer to this rising concern must begin by frankly and humbly admitting that the common ground of equal natural rights on which our common morality is based is no longer visible to many Americans. We must refocus on the proposition that united this nation from the beginning: the proposition of the Declaration of Independence that there are “self-evident truths” which unite all Americans under a common creed.

But it is almost impossible to hold to this creed, which describes what and who we are, without reference to the Creator as the ultimate source of human equality and natural rights. This is the deepest reason why the Founders saw faith as the key to good character as well as good citizenship, and why we must remain “one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” Pray.

The proposition of political equality is powerfully supported by biblical faith, which confirms that all human beings are equal in dignity and created in God’s image. Every form of religious faith is entitled to religious liberty, so long as all comprehend and sincerely assent to the fundamental principle that under “the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God” all human beings are equally endowed with unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.  Pray.

As the first American President George Washington wrote in 1790 to the Hebrew Congregation in Newport, Rhode Island: “The Citizens of the United States of America have a right to applaud themselves for having given to mankind examples of an enlarged and liberal policy: a policy worthy of imitation. All possess alike liberty of conscience and immunities of citizenship. It is now no more that toleration is spoken of, as if it was by the indulgence of one class of people, that another enjoyed the exercise of their inherent natural rights. For happily the Government of the United States, which gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance, requires only that they who live under its protection should demean themselves as good citizens, in giving it on all occasions their effectual support.” Pray.

In his “First  Inaugural Address,” Thomas Jefferson said:

”Enlightened by a benign religion, professed, indeed, and practiced in various forms, yet all of them inculcating honesty, truth, temperance, gratitude, and the love of man; acknowledging and adoring an overruling Providence, which by all its  dispensations  proves that it delights in the happiness of man here and his greater happiness hereafter—with all these blessings, what more is necessary to make us a happy and a prosperous people?”  Pray.

By 1835, Alexis de Tocqueville – Democracy in America – could make the following observation: “Religion, which, among Americans, never mixes directly in the government of society, should therefore be considered as the first of their political institutions; for if it does not give them the taste for freedom, it singularly facilitates their use of it… I do not know if all Americans have faith in their religion—for who can read to the bottom of hearts?—but I am sure that they believe it necessary to the maintenance of republican institutions. This opinion does not belong only to one class of citizens or to one party, but to the entire nation; one finds it in all ranks.” Pray.

Yale Law School professor Stephen L. Carter, wrote in The Culture of Disbelief: How American Law and Politics Trivialize Religious Devotion:  The potential transformation of the Establishment Clause from a guardian of religious liberty into a guarantor of public secularism raises prospects at once dismal and dreadful. The more that the clause is used to disable religious groups from active involvement in the programs of the welfare state, or, for that matter, from active involvement in the public square that is the crucible of public policy, the less the religions will be able to play their proper democratic role of mediating between the individual and the state and the less they will be able to play their proper theological role of protecting the people of God.”Pray.

“Maybe it is just another effort to ensure that intermediate institutions, such as the religions, do not get in the way of the government’s will. Perhaps, in short, it is a way of ensuring that only one vision of the meaning of reality that of the powerful group of individuals called the state – is allowed a political role. Back in Tocqueville’s day, this was called tyranny. Nowadays, all too often, but quite mistakenly, it is called the separation of church and state.”  Pray.

We pray:

  • That in this 21st century, Americans will not only practice their faith, but bring its tenants to the public arena, where it will permeate and penetrate every aspect of our society. Pray.
  • That we will hold to our founding principles, which describe what and who we are, and understand that they all point back to our Creator, Who is the ultimate Source of human equality and natural rights. Pray.
  • That President Trump will continue to focus our people on being “one nation, under God, with liberty and justice for all!” Pray.
  • That he will set an “appointed place” and an “appointed time” for our meeting with him! Pray.
