WELCOME THE KING OF GLORY INTO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

ONE NATION UNDER GOD, INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL!

The Activation of the Spirit of the American Revolution – Part 3

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil,

to give you a future and a hope.”

Jeremiah 29:11

As we are praying for the activation of the Spirit of the American Revolution in this nation once again, we are reviewing many of our founding documents, seeing our nation through the eyes of those who trusted God’s plan for this fledgling nation,  and pledged “their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor” to see it established. Today, we continue with the Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union…the “original constitution” of the United States of America, and ultimately replaced by the US Constitution in 1789.  It is a written agreement among the 13 original states, created by the Second Continental Congress, approved and ratified by all 13 states, between 1777 and 1781. It provided clearly written rules for how the states’ “league of friendship” would be organized. Benjamin Franklin wrote the first draft, and presented it to Congress in July 1775.  Altogether, six drafts of the Articles were prepared before Congress settled on a final version in 1777. Pray.

The Articles of Confederation contains thirteen articles and a conclusion. They were signed by 48 people from the thirteen states. Some of the prominent signers included: Samuel Adams, John Dickinson, Elbridge Gerry, John Hancock, Richard Henry Lee, Gouverneur Morris, Robert Morris, Roger Sherman, and John Witherspoon.

The primary advantage that the Articles of Confederation provided was its ability to maintain the independence and sovereignty of each state within the union. At the same time, the states could use the articles to band together, send ambassadors to other nations overseas, and handle territory issues

  • It planned the structure of the new government and created a confederation of states.
  • It granted powers to the states and to the federal government.
  • Each state retained its sovereignty, freedom, and independence, and every power, jurisdiction, and right, which was not expressly delegated by this Confederation.
  • Thus, it provided a legal symbol of their union by giving the central government no coercive power over the states or their citizens.

Pray.

There were both pros and cons in the Articles of Confederation…

Pros:

  • States kept their power and independence.
  • No overly powerful government bossing everyone around.
  • Colonists were able to create their own military.

Pray.

Cons:

  • Congress could not enforce laws.
  • Could not collect taxes.
  • Every state had to agree to change articles.

Pray.

The original draft of the Articles of Confederation, housed in the National Archives in College Park, MD

The Articles created a loose confederation of sovereign states and a weak central government, leaving most of the power with the state governments. Under the Articles, the states, not Congress, had the power to tax. Congress could raise money only by asking the states for funds, borrowing from foreign governments, and selling western lands. In addition, Congress could not draft soldiers or regulate trade. The need for a stronger Federal government soon became apparent and eventually led to the Constitutional Convention in 1787. The key difference between the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution was in how they codified the law.

  • The Articles of Confederation established a unicameral legislature,
  • The Constitution established a bicameral system (House + Senate) and was a unique document for its time.

Pray.

There are 13 “articles”. Read all of these short summaries,  then pray as the Spirit leads about them!

Article 1: Created the name of the combined 13 states as The United States of America.

Article 2: State governments still had their own powers that were not listed in the Articles of Confederation

Article 3: The combined states were responsible for helping to protect each other from attacks.

Article 4: People can travel freely from state to state; however, criminals who left the state where they committed the crime would be sent back for trial.

Article 5: Creates the Congress of the Confederation. Each state gets one vote in the congress and can send between 2 and 7 people to participate in the congress.

Article 6: The new central government is responsible for working with other countries, including trade agreements and declaring war. States were required to have trained soldiers who could be ready to fight.

Article 7: States could choose their own military leaders.

Article 8: Each state government had to raise money to give to the new central government.

Article 9: Only the new central government had the power to make declare war, and make peace with foreign countries. The central government was also responsible for assigning Ambassadors to represent the United States in other countries.

Article 10: Created a group called the Committee of States who could act for the Congress of Confederation when the Congress was not working.

Article 11: Stated that Canada could join the new nation if it wanted.

Article 12: Stated that the new nation agreed to pay for earlier war debts.

Article 13: Declared that the Articles of Confederation were forever and could only be changed by the Congress of Confederation and if all the states agreed. Pray.

With the passage of time, weaknesses in the Articles of Confederation became apparent. Congress commanded little respect and no support from state governments anxious to maintain their power. It could not raise funds, regulate trade, or conduct foreign policy without the voluntary agreement of the states. There was no power to enforce laws. No judicial branch or national courts. Amendments needed to have a unanimous vote. One of the biggest problems was that the national government had no power to impose taxes. To avoid any perception of “taxation without representation,” the Articles of Confederation allowed only state governments to levy taxes. To pay for its expenses, the national government had to request money from the states.

Ultimately, the Articles of Confederation had to be replaced, because they were crafted to keep the national government as weak as possible. Pray.

The Continental-Confederation Congress, a legislative body that governed the United States from 1774 to 1789, contained an extraordinary number of deeply religious men. The amount of energy that Congress invested in encouraging the practice of religion in the new nation exceeded that expended by any subsequent American national government. Pray.

Although the Articles of Confederation did not officially authorize Congress to concern itself with religion, the citizenry did not object to such activities. This lack of objection suggests that both the legislators and the public considered it appropriate for the national government to promote a non-denominational, non-polemical Christianity.

  • Congress appointed chaplains for itself and the armed forces, sponsored the publication of a Bible, imposed Christian morality on the armed forces, and granted public lands to promote Christianity among the Indians.
  • National days of thanksgiving and of “humiliation, fasting, and prayer” were proclaimed by Congress at least twice a year throughout the war.
  • Congress was guided by “covenant theology,” a Reformation doctrine especially dear to New England Puritans, which held that God bound himself in an agreement with a nation and its people. This agreement stipulated that they “should be prosperous or afflicted, according as their general Obedience or Disobedience thereto appears.”
  • Wars and revolutions were, accordingly, considered afflictions, as divine punishments for sin, from which a nation could rescue itself by repentance and reformation. Pray.

The first national government of the United States, was convinced that the “public prosperity” of a society depended on the vitality of its religion. Nothing less than a “spirit of universal reformation among all ranks and degrees of our citizens,” Congress declared to the American people, would “make us holy, that so we may be a happy people.” AMEN and AMEN! Pray.

We pray:

  • That as a people, we will never cease to worship and honor the Lord, Who brought us forth as a nation and sustained us these almost 245 years!  Pray.
  • That we will take the time to learn about, and then teach our children, and others who are willing to hear us,  America’s true history.  Pray.
  • For “nothing less than a “spirit of universal reformation among all ranks and degrees of our citizens,”  so that we might be “a holy and happy” people!  Pray.
  • That President Trump will continue to lead and inspire God-fearing, patriotic Americans, who will rise up in the Spirit of the American Revolution and take this country back from the demonic forces that are now strangling it! Pray.
  • That he will set an “appointed place” and an “appointed time” for our meeting with him!  Pray.
