The “spirit of mammon” – Part 1 – Understanding the spirit of mammon
“No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other,
or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.”
Matthew 6:24
Today, we are starting a series in which we will look at what the “spirit of mammon” really is, how it operates, what structures it works through, and how it strives to maintain influence and control as the ruling evil principality over the United States. As we begin, we cover ourselves, our households and all who are on this call with the Blood of Jesus and pray for the guidance and protection of the Holy Spirit. We declare that we are ONE NATION UNDER GOD and that Jesus Christ is Lord, and we serve no other gods! AMEN! ALLELUIA!
“Mammon” is defined in the Merriam-Webster dictionary as “material wealth or possessions, especially as having a debasing influence; degrading, devaluing, demeaning, cheapening, prostituting, discrediting, disgracing, dishonoring, bring shame to, humiliating, undermining”. It also quotes part of Matthew 6:24: “You cannot serve God and mammon.” The name “mammon” originally comes from the Syrian god of riches, which came from Babylon…a place that demonstrated pride, arrogance, self-confidence and independence from God.
It is also defined as: “the force that makes people try to become as rich as possible and the belief that this is the most important thing in life“, a “dedication to riches that is tantamount to devotion”...and “the greedy pursuit of gain”.
We see this “devotion” to excess in those who become so enslaved to having all that the worship of mammon brings (money, power, influence) that many have committed suicide when their fortunes were reversed. In 1 Timothy 6:10 we read: “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”
We pray:
- Lord, that You will give us understanding that will enable us to avoid the pride, arrogance and self- confidence that leads to separation from You…bringing destruction, both individually and for the nation!
- Preserve us from the futility of self-seeking which leads us to turn from You and chase after false gods!
From our very inception, our Founding Fathers were in prayer together as they composed the documents that shaped and guided our nation. They spoke freely and openly of the quality of VIRTUE, defined as “conformity to a standard of right: MORALITY, a beneficial quality or power, manly strength or courage: VALOR a commendable quality or trait: MERIT. a capacity to act: POTENCY.”
- George Washington wrote, “There is no truth more thoroughly established, than that there exists…an indissoluble union between virtue and happiness.” (First Inaugural Speech (1789)
- In his Farewell Address he stated, “Can it be that Providence has not connected the permanent felicity [happiness] of a nation with its virtue?”
- Thomas Jefferson wrote to a friend, “The order of nature [is] that individual happiness shall be inseparable from the practice of virtue.” (Letter to M. Correa de Serra, 1814)
- In another letter, almost quoting Tillotson, Jefferson stated: “Without virtue, happiness cannot be.” (Letter to Amos J. Cook, 1816)
- On another occasion he wrote, “Happiness is the aim of life. Virtue is the foundation of happiness.” (Letter to William Short, October 31, 1819) ‘
We pray:
- That we would understand that the only true and lasting happiness is that which comes through the pursuit of a relationship with You…which is grounded in being virtuous!
Jefferson’s references to the connection between virtue and happiness are consistent with his Anglican upbringing and religious environment. With this in mind, many believe that the words Jefferson penned in the most famous line of the Declaration of Independence originally read, “We hold these truths to be self‑evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Virtue.”
While over the course of time Jefferson rejected some forms of organized religion and certain of its doctrines, he never rejected Christianity’s moral precepts. In fact, he embraced them. In 1820, he wrote, “I hold the precepts of Jesus, as delivered by himself, to be the most pure, benevolent, and sublime which have ever been preached to man.” This statement was made in the same year that he had finally completed (spending untold hours cutting and pasting) his personal compilation of the moral teachings of Jesus from the Gospels in the New Testament in English, French, Latin and Greek which he titled “The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth” – impressive evidence of Jefferson’s unique religious devotion to Christian morality without the orthodox superstructure.
We pray:
- And we gratefully acknowledge that we live in a country founded on faith in You and Your Word. We also acknowledge we have strayed far from You, and in sincere humility, we plead for Your mercy, asking You turn our hearts as a nation and bring us back to You, our First Love.
The phrase “radix malorum est cupiditas” is a Biblical quotation in Latin that means “greed is the root of evil” (or “the root of evil is greed”). This Latin phrase is a translation of the original Greek manuscripts of the Bible. Jefferson and all the signers of the Declaration of Independence understood that when they pledged “our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor” on behalf of this nation. For them it was a selfless act…a virtuous act…and being “virtuous” was not compatible with being greedy…or self centered. The love of “material wealth or possessions” spoken of in the definition of mammon above was far from their thoughts! If fact, most of them lost everything they had, including their lives, in the launching of this GREAT EXPERIMENT called the United States of America!
We pray:
- We are deeply grateful, Lord, for our Founders’ foresight in establishing our God-given right to pursue virtue and live lives consecrated to You and Your values.
Fast forward to 2019…242 years later, we are still being called by God and challenged as individuals and as a nation to be virtuous! That challenge is nowhere as intense as in the battle between LIGHT and DARKNESS, and it is being played out in the national stage daily by those who serve mammon as they battle against those who serve God!
In the Mishnaic Hebrew, “mammon” ממון (mamôn) is defined as money, wealth or possessions; and also as “that in which one trusts.“ Therefore, we cannot trust in God and mammon…we must choose either One or the other…between worship of the Creator and life or worship and trust in mammon…and death! This is clearly expressed in Deuteronomy 30:19-20 “I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; that you may love the Lord your God, that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him, for He is your life and the length of your days”
Look at how mammon operates in direct contrast to the Spirit of God:
- mammon says: “Buy and keep” ..”Cheat and steal”a — God says: “Sow and reap”…”Give and receive”
- mammon is self-centered…sacrificing character for money. It steals trust in God, Who calls us to be Christ-centered and unselfish, generously sharing our resources.
- mammon is accompanied by spirits like pride, greed and poverty, that torment the lives of its slaves. The Spirit of God brings blessings of love, joy and peace…among others.
- mammon is unfaithful…it steals the devotion that rightly belongs to God, then uses, abuses and abandons its victims. Jesus – Who is Faithful – promised that He will never leave us or forsake us!
We pray:
- Lord, having seen the Biblical description and dictionary definitions of the spirit of mammon, we ask that You will now teach is how this spirit has gained the power and influence it has today.
- Through this series, prepare us to be part of Your work in turning the tide in the United States, restoring our national foundations, so our people will no longer forsake You for a false sense of personal gain or power.

Specific Prayer Topic for Today
Praying for our Supreme Court and the Judicial System
In disclosing the Mueller report, Attorney General William P. Barr will have to redact grand jury information. That is the upshot of the ruling by a divided panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. The issues at question:
- Does a federal court have the authority to order disclosure of grand jury materials if the judge decides that the interests of justice warrant doing so?
- Is the judge limited to the exceptions to grand jury secrecy that are spelled out in Rule 6(e) of the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure?
The DC Circuit’s McKeever ruling holds that the text of Rule 6(e) controls. Consequently, judges have no authority to authorize disclosure outside the rule. This is significant for the Mueller report because Rule 6(e) does not contain an exception to secrecy that would permit disclosure to Congress.
We pray:
- That AG Barr takes his time to do what is legally correct, and that when he releases the Mueller report, it will prove conclusively, beyond a doubt, that the President is innocent of the charges against him.
