Strategic Focus for Tuesday

WELCOME THE KING OF GLORY INTO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

2nd Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom

“Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”

2 Corinthians 3:17

As the Trump Administration is pushing for religious freedom around the globe, leaders from various nations will gather in Washington, DC this week to discuss religious freedom. A release from the U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE announced the Office of International Religious Freedom 2nd Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom, from July 15th–19th, a highly anticipated gathering by many evangelical leaders in the United States. The first Ministerial took place in July 2018, and this year’s expected participation will be by 1,000 civil society and religious community representatives, representing every corner of the world. They will be continuing conversations from last year’s event and several recent regional conferences. Side events to the Ministerial, which continues through Friday, will include various roundtables, visits to ministry sites and receptions at different agencies and for representatives of the various persuasions in attendance. The events of the Formal Ministerial will be live-streamed at George Washington University and open to the public.

US Ambassador-at-Large for Religious Freedom Sam Brownback stressed how the Trump administration has been focusing on the basics. “Unfortunately, you’ve got so many countries in the world that have gotten the basics wrong,” Brownback said. He pointed to freedom of assembly and expression as examples of topics that will be discussed in detail. “A number of countries are stepping up and agreeing with this…I don’t know [how] they’d say it in their words, but in their actions, ‘Yes, we’ve got too many problems going on in this area; it’s too critical – we need to be addressing this.'”

We pray

  • In agreement with our First Secretary of State, Thomas Jefferson, who said:

“Almighty God hath created the mind free. All attempts to influence it by temporal punishments or burthens…are a departure from the plan of the Holy Author of our religion…No man shall be compelled to frequent or support any religious worship or ministry or shall otherwise suffer on account of his religious opinions or belief, but all men shall be free to profess and by argument to maintain, their opinions in matters of religion.

When Ambassador Brownback was asked what he and other organizers are looking to accomplish at this year’s event, he said: “Really, to push the grassroots movement around the world for religious freedom. We’ll have 1,000 religious freedom activists and religious leaders, and we need them to push for religious freedom for their people, do round tables [and] bind together with others to push for this.”

Secretary Pompeo also defended religious freedom in a June 7th speech he delivered at the annual summit hosted by Christians United for Israel (CUFI). His speech focused on the strong US-Israel relationship but at one point he compared religious freedom in Israel to its neighbors. “In many countries, if a Muslim leaves Islam it is considered an apostasy. And it is punishable by death.”

Ambassador Brownback said that they hope to start discussions, on “some basic minimums” of what religious freedom looks like, in various places around the world. “You don’t just arrest somebody for being a religious minority – you keep people alive. If someone is killed because they’re a religious minority, you prosecute the people that did the crime – so just really doing some basics and saying, ‘You’ve got to do these basics to deem yourself anywhere close to starting your country down a road of protecting religious minorities.’”

This Ministerial will reaffirm international commitments to promote religious freedom for all and focus on concrete outcomes that produce durable, positive change. A broad range of stakeholders, including senior government representatives, international organization representatives, religious leaders, and civil society activists, will convene to discuss challenges, identify concrete ways to combat religious persecution and discrimination and ensure greater respect for freedom of religion or belief.

Let us review and pray into the anticipated schedule for the formal Ministerial:

Day One – Tuesday, July 16th – CIVIL SOCIETY – Expanding the Conversation on Religious Freedom: civil society, religious leaders and government officials will convene to discuss the opportunities and challenges for promoting and defending religious freedom globally. Through a series of plenary sessions, participants will discuss the necessary building blocks and emerging trends in advancing religious freedom, as well as how religious freedom, international development and humanitarian aid can work together to advance mutual interests.

We pray:

  • As those who believes You created all men equal, we pray for Your guidance and wisdom in how the nations should treat people of all faiths! Guide our world leaders to honorable and wise policies that secure the safety of all their people, that they might live together in peace and harmony!

Day Two – Wednesday, July 17th – CIVIL SOCIETY AND GOVERNMENT – “Deep Dive”: three separate, concurrent discussions for the attendees of Day One will take place, to unpack ideas generated during Day One. These sessions will be hosted in three different venues within and in the immediate vicinity of the Harry S. Truman Building to allow for more focused discussions and a greater number of breakout sessions. Topical experts, civil society actors, religious leaders, academics and working-level government officials have been invited to discuss topics such as best practices for religious freedom advocacy; limitations in forming, registering and recognizing religious communities; challenges facing religious minorities; combatting the rise of anti-Semitism and anti-Islamic behavior; and countering violent extremism; religious freedom and national security; religious freedom and economic development; cultural heritage protection for religious sites; religious minorities and humanitarian crises; international development aid and religious freedom; and mobilizing faith leaders around peace and development goals.

We pray:

  • As religious freedom hangs in the balance in so many places throughout the world, we ask for Your guidance and help in restoring freedom of worship for those living now and for generations to come.

Day Three – Thursday, July 18th – GOVERNMENT – Government Action: senior government and international organization representatives will participate in plenary sessions focused on: identifying global challenges to religious freedom; developing innovative responses to persecution on the basis of religion; and sharing new commitments to protect religious freedom for all. Invitations will be extended to like-minded governments that have a demonstrated record of advancing religious freedom and are committed to promoting Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, or governments that have taken significant and meaningful steps to do so. Survivors or close relatives of those who suffered persecution due to their religion or beliefs will share their stories. Government delegations will be encouraged to announce new actions and commitments they will take to protect and promote freedom of religion or belief.

We pray:

  • Lord, we believe that our sacred human rights come from You and that the first right is the right to live out our faith in freedom. We pray for the leaders of countries where there is currently no religious liberty. Open the doors open for true religious freedom and expression and bring revival in each one!

Today, Wednesday and Thursday, we of the 24/7 National Strategic Prayer Call family are serving as intercessors “off-site” on behalf of this crucial Ministerial. Please pray each point below aloud, and then invite participants to respond: “AMEN!”

  • We stand in the authority given to us by the Lord Jesus Christ, to bind and cast out any demonic spirits operating there, cleansing the State Department and all buildings and rooms in which sessions are held…particularly as the individual delegates enter. Let them be cleansed and separated from any spirits operating in or on them, so they might be able to hear and respond to the promptings of God throughout the Ministerial! AMEN!
  • We welcome the Lord’s Presence into the proceedings, inviting the Holy Spirit to guard and guide the discussions and to bring forth the results He desires from this gathering! AMEN!
  • We cover in prayer all those in attendance (from Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Ambassador Sam Brownback to the key speakers who are in alignment with God’s purposes for this ministerial, and to those participating) so that each one might easily tune into God’s heart and act on what they hear! AMEN!
  • We pray on behalf of those Christians in the nations suffering persecution! We ask You to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness and expose all betrayers that are operating against Your will and agenda for America and the nations. Let the restorative KINGDOM benefits of Jesus’ sacrifice flow to the nations and to us and our families, our people, our leaders, President. Donald Trump, VP Mike Pence and their families, and Administration! AMEN!

During the time of this Ministerial, we are standing with Ambassador Brownback and Secretary Pompeo, who freely shared his heart prior to this gathering. Hear his public “testimony”:

“This mission is not just a Trump administration priority – it’s a deeply personal one. For many years, I was a Sunday school teacher and a deacon at my church…and that might sound unusual to a lot of folks inside the Beltway…but I am one of millions of Americans, and billions of people across the world, who live in the knowledge of a Higher Power…I often humbly reflect on how God’s Providence has guided me to this office, to defend this cause…I think about how, as an American, I’ve been blessed to enjoy the unfettered exercise of religious freedom, our first liberty here in the United States.”
